Liverpool have reportedly inserted an unusual clause in Roberto Firmino’s contract which prevents only Arsenal from triggering his release clause, according to Football Leaks.
The Brazil playmaker is reported to have an £82m buy-out option on his current deal at Anfield which allegedly stipulates “if the interested club is not Arsenal”.
The revelation suggests Liverpool have not forgotten about the Gunners’ failed attempt to sign Luis Suarez in 2013, where £40m plus £1 was tabled by the north London club, an offer viewed by many as derisory.
The report, published in Le Soir, indicates an ongoing distaste at the way Arsenal’s interest in the Uruguayan was handled.
Suarez would go on to leave for Barcelona a year later for £75m and has since scored more than a goal every other game, with Liverpool then reinvesting that money.
Firmino cost £29m from Hoffenheim last year and has proven a big hit under Klopp, particularly his link-up with Philippe Coutinho, who is sidelined through injury.
Sportsmail’s Jamie Carragher said on Monday night that there is nobody better at harrying defenders in England. Statistics show he covers more ground than any other top striker in the division.
Roberto Firmino is as good as anyone in the Premier League at winning the ball back and closing people down,’ Carragher told Sky Sports. ‘He is a massive part of this Liverpool team.’
